Dick DeVos is the epitome of what one would call a magnate. Even from a young age, he was exposed to a considerable amount of the business world with his families involvement with Amway, even being the greeter to prospective clients as a youth and hanging around the office. Since then, he has hit the ground running and has furthered his career and wealth from his position in the family company where he served as both president and vice president of the company bringing in 4.5 billion from the last fiscal years. Not to be outdone by this success, he also was the president of the Orlando Magic for three years and an author of a best-selling book “Rediscovering American Values.”
But what often gets lost in this maelstrom of business and success is Devo’s constant involvement in the field of philanthropy along with his wife, Betsy Devos. If one were to pursue their charitable donations, they would find ou that Devos has given almost 139 million dollars in his lifetime to charity, focusing mainly on education
For Dick Devo’s education is a privilege that no child should be denied the right to and through that belief has surmounted a large number of scholarships for children who might have never attended higher education. For Devos, it should not matter who or where the child comes from: They should get an excellent education regardless. He also donated a hefty amount to charter schools to which he believes creates a better way for education as it allows a more competition and variety which in turn contributes to creating a more vibrant school system. This is a belief that has not been misplaced as the schools in question have become so popular that many from out of the area take the extra time in travel to attend.
Not to be outdone in his belief in Charter Schools, Devos started an aviation charter school on the grounds of Gerald R Ford International in which aspiring pilots can get their wings. This bold approach to education has led him to become a celebrity in which many of his fundraising Galas are often frequented by high ranking politicians such as President George W. Bush and astronauts among many others.
Not stopping just at education, Devos gives a great amount of money to the arts and also to medical science. For Devos, these charitable donations is not a means but rather a must and duty for him. Even growing up Devos witnessed his family giving money to worthy causes and continues this tradition with his wife and kids. It is important to remember to look through beyond one’s wealth and to the heart.
Nowadays, Dick DeVos is helping his wife in changing the educational system by supporting the reform of the department and supporting pro-reform decisions. In 2017, Betsy DeVos was rewarded with the honorable spot as the U.S. Secretary of Education.
