Meet Sujit Choudhry: Constitution Building Expert, Published Author, and Consultant to Emerging Democracies.

As a subject matter expert on constitutions and consultant to emerging democracies, Sujit Choudhry has studied the successes and failures of other countries regarding constitutional matters. Sujit Choudhry is Director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions, an organization that works with countries like Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Ukraine and Yemen. His forte involves the construction of new constitutions and the modifying of other ones.

Choudhry was born in New Delhi India in 1970, and his mother and father were both professors, so education was a priority in his family. Choudhry has three law degrees, one from Oxford University, the University of Toronto, and Harvard University, Choudhry has experience with understanding law from the viewpoint of many different democratic countries, especially the United States. Choudhry’s broad range of expertise in public policy and in comparative constitutional law has made him a sought after resource on a global scale.

As Director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions, Choudhry helps by facilitating a dialogue between many different entities. Their mission is to network international experts to complete projects, which can offer evidence-focused choices for all stakeholders involved. This mission also involves generating and preparing knowledge for constitution building as part of this networking initiative amongst think tanks, non-governmental organizations (NGO), and multinational entities.

As much as the intentions of these key entities involved in constitution building for emerging democracies can be good, pitfalls can still occur. But Sujit Choudhry stays positive by noting that setbacks present an opportunity to regroup, and that something better can be created from setbacks. Choudhry has an impressive résumé that includes working for the Supreme Court of Canada, writing many books in his fields of expertise, and teaching law in academia.
