Richard Liu Qiangdong – Revealing His Plans for Expansion of JD.com

With so many e-commerce companies trying hard to reach the top of the e-commerce industry, it has become challenging for the companies to compete and get a significant market share. However, even in such fiercely competitive e-commerce market, Richard Liu Qiangdong has been able to come out at the top and dominate the e-commerce market through the success he has helped JD.com achieve under his leadership. Richard Liu Qiangdong believes that it is important for the new age e-commerce companies to understand the requirements of the customers to fill the void in the respective market.

Richard Liu Qiangdong saw that even though there were many companies active in the e-commerce market, none of these companies have been able to gain the trust of the end-users ultimately. It was mostly because of the flawed business model they followed that allowed the merchants to use the e-commerce platforms offered by the companies to connect to and sell products to the customers.

Most of the e-commerce companies, including the top e-commerce company in China today, Alibaba, follow the same model. Richard Liu Qiangdong took a completely different path and wanted to eliminate the middlemen, and it is why he invested millions in developing the logistics infrastructure of the company. JD.com went on to become the biggest direct selling company in China and the second biggest in terms of net revenue. The success achieved by JD.com has made Richard Liu the sixteenth richest man in China today and has the approximate net worth of more than $12 billion. Richard Liu Qiangdong is sure of the fact that in time to come, JD.com would topple its competitors from the top position to take over.

The focus of Richard Liu Qiangdong, as he said in an interview recently, was never only to increase the company’s revenue, but to also enhance the company’s market reputation. Richard Liu is confident with the business management practices in place in the company currently, it would be able to grow and expand efficiently across the borders as well. Richard Liu has been eyeing expansion in South Asia and Europe in the next few years before moving to the United States and further West.

JD.com’s Record-Breaking 6.18 Campaign as More Consumers “Trade-Up”

JD.com is the largest online retailer in China in terms of revenue. The company commits to quality, authenticity, and a wide variety of customers.

A record-breaking achievement in 2019 marked the JD.com’s June 16 Anniversary Sale (“6.18”). This breakthrough of $29.2 billion was due to the escalating demand for high-quality in China as well as the introduction of new products. The company used a new channel to socialize and introduce new products to customers. Also, the lower-tier city shoppers are “trading up,” depicting interest in brands that are identical to consumers of higher-tier cities.

JD surpassed the collective growth by the growth volume in lower-tier cities. Also, there were more new customers of lower-tier towns than new users on the platform. The company launched two campaigns, such as “birthday red envelope,” which created traffic sharing on social media. The other one allowed shoppers to win shared rewards for their cities after voting and sharing.

The Consumer-to-Manufacturer (C2M) marketing strategy in the Chinese market has worked exceptionally. This powerful method uses consumer insights and big data, which helps the manufacturer to produce the exact products demanded by customers. An increase of 289% from the last year’s period shows the effectiveness of this year’s 6.18 campaign. The C2M products such as Zhan 66 laptop made HP record 100% sales increase.

Various new brands have been introduced on JD.com during the campaign. Some of them include Car Shoe, MiuMiu, which are under Prada –an Italian designer brand. They all launched official flagship stores on the JD website. Additionally, customers will have over 3,000 brands to choose from since Farfetch also launched a flagship store. The premium membership of JD.com is gaining popularity as the company is working with the world’s top hotel brands. During this 6.18, JD Plus membership sold were over 2.8 million.

In addition to that, technology has played a significant role of JD in improving the customer experience. About 91% of orders were delivered within a few hours. The customer service robots independently solved 90% of about 32 million inquiries during the 6.18. This innovation has freed human customer service for relatively complex consumer issues.

On a different light, an article entitled “JD Launches New Green Initiatives in Partnership with WWF Earth Hour Movement”, discusses JD’s partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) this year in the ongoing support of the Earth Hour environmental movement, launching a range of initiatives that include country-wide recycling programs and sustainable green packaging.

Many companies are now asking JD.com to become their business partner because of the perks associated with it. China CITIC Bank is among the newest business partners who have signed a contract with JD.com. China CITIC Bank has a points-reward system for their most loyal customers, but they are having problems with the logistics because of the sheer number of people who are using their services.

They had an idea to work with JD.com because of the JD’s extensive logistics network, and after the Chinese e-commerce giant demonstrated their services to the China CITIC Bank, the number of days required to deliver the gifts to their loyal customers were cut from 5.5 days to just 2.5 days. The efficiency rose to more than 100%, and the China CITIC Bank became more confident that their customers will be more satisfied working with them.

In the past, China CITIC Bank had to redirect their loyal customers to a page where they can choose the gifts that they wanted, in exchange for the points that they have acquired through a certain period of time. China CITIC Bank is working with different gifts provider in the past, making it more time consuming for them to gather the products. Now that they are working with JD.com, it will be easier to locate the product that their customers wanted, and once it has been selected, the product will be shipped to the nearest JD.com warehouse on the address written on the order. China CITIC Bank also benefited from the packaging design made by JD.com. It helped the company gain more exposure and the most loyal cardholders of the China CITIC Bank will be expecting more gifts to come.

JD.com said that the successful partnership with the China CITIC Bank is a part of their strategy called the Retail as Service Strategy, and it aims to help the financial corporations to ease out their logistics need by providing them with an adequate network that will help them reach most of the population of China. JD.com has a lot of delivery drones and self-driving cars that would help make the delivery services simpler.

Rubenstein started the interview with questions about the company and how Richard Liu began his career. Richard Liu answered that in college he started his first business which was a restaurant. Unfortunately, it failed as he was not completely free. Then, in 1998, he tried again but this time it was a retail company selling computer accessories. Go To This Page for additional information.

When Rubenstein asked how SARS affected the business, Richard Liu said that he had to close the 12 shops. While the managers were meeting, one of them said that if they cannot have physical communication with customers then let it be online. After two years of analysis, the stores were completely closed this time to be replaced with JD.com. Rubenstein had a question about the reason that made the company grow rapidly in a short period of time. The key was the quality of products and the best experience they offer to the customer. They started with IT products, on to digital, then mobile phones; adding a new product each year.

Richard Liu declared, when Rubenstein asked him about his future plans for the company to expand, that he looks forward to bringing the best products to China, then going to southeast Asia, the Middle East, after that Europe and the US. Liu emphasized the abundant products provided by JD.com; that reached 1 billion product, made it excel its top competitor; Walmart.

JD.com And Its Environmental Pledge

There are many innovations that JD.com, otherwise known as Jingdong Mall, the world’s largest retailer, has developed to help with its pledge to be environmentally conscious. Jingdong has been using several methods already. In the past few years, it has begun using drones and robot delivery systems to reduce the amount of carbon that it uses.

The “Last Mile System” aims to use alternative fuel for the last mile of every delivery. The robot delivery cars can travel in a 5km radius and deliver thousands of packages a day. They do not require fossil fuels. JD.com has also been using drones. They do not just deliver packages, but they also deliver medical supplies.

JD.com has 300 million customer across China and it processes billions of transactions a year. It can often deliver packages in one day. Its infrastructure is enormous, so it takes its environmental issues seriously. It has also implemented reusable packages. Each box can be used up to ten times. They are free to customers. The delivery driver can be handed the box to be reused. Click Here for more information.

Delivery drivers can also collect returns, so customers do not have to mail them. There are even smaller things that Jingdong Mall has done. By reducing the amount of tape used on packages, it has reduced the tape by 100 million meters in just two years.

JD.com wants to set the industry standard. It is trying to work with suppliers so that they will also be more responsible and sustainable. Jingdong has partnered with groups like United Nations Development Program. This is not a short term plan for JD.com. It sees it as a permanent way to move forward for all retail businesses. As JD.com is expected to grow even more over the next few years, it will continue to be at the forefront of new ways to be environmentally responsible.
