CARLOS YULO SET FOR RETURN AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

MANILA, Philippines — Carlos Yulo is set to return to action at the 53rd Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The tournament will run from October 19 to 25 with the first four days allotted for the qualification stage and the last three for the finals.

Yulo ruled the 2019 floor exercise and 2021 vault apparatus of the Worlds but did not join last year to rest his body after a grueling preparation for and campaign at the Paris Olympics.

It was all worth it for Yulo who made history as the first Filipino Olympic double gold medalist, topping the same events he ruled at the Worlds.

Ten months after the Summer Games, Yulo swung back to competition at the Asian Championships in Jecheon, South Korea last June.

The 4-foot-11 dynamo moved like he never missed a beat as he seized the gold at floor exercise and a bronze each at the all-around, vault, and parallel bars.

Now, the 25-year-old Yulo sizes himself up against the world anew alongside fellow nationals Juancho Miguel Besana, John Ivan Cruz, and Justine Ace de Leon.

Yulo and company are in subdivision 6 of the men's qualification on October 19 at 8:20 p.m.

“Right now I’m really focusing on doing all-arounds at the same time doing vault and floor,” said Yulo in a report by the FIG website.

Yulo is set to clash with familiar opponents in Israeli Artem Dolgopyat and Fil-British Jake Garman, who finished behind him in that order in floor exercise in Paris last year.

Dolgopyat ruled the floor exercise at the 2023 World Championships while Jarman the vault in the same edition.

“I know that they (Dologopyat and Garman) are really working hard for the spot and I’m really grateful that I’m at their level and putting that much pressure on me, especially on floor and vault,” said Yulo.

“It’s going to be a tough competition for me at the same time, but I’m going to make sure to prepare myself.”

Meanwhile, Yulo's fellow Olympians Aleah Finnegan and Emma Malabuyo as well as Haylee Garcia and his sister Elaiza Andriel will also see action in the women's side.

The Filipinas are in subdivision 7 of the women's qualification on October 21 at 3 p.m.
