C-STAN CAN TURN UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT AFTER 6 CONFERENCES. BUT THERE'S A CATCH

TERRAFIRMA will retain the signing rights of Christian Standhardinger once the Dyip offer him a new deal before his existing PBA Uniform Players Contract expires at the end of the year.

This was explained by PBA commissioner Willie Marcial when asked about the rules that covers Standhardinger after he informed his mother team Terrafirma about his decision to retire.

Marcial also said Terrafirma can seek any legal remedy against Standhardinger for not fulfilling his contract by not playing for the Dyip this conference.

The Dyip said Standhardinger has not showed up for practice for the Commissioner’s Cup even though he is still under contract with the team until December 31.

"May isang buwan pa siyang kontrata sa Terrafirma. Ang magagawa ng Terrafirma doon, kung hahabulin, idedemanda," said Marcial on Thursday.

On how Terrafirma can retain Standhardinger’s rights, Marcial said Terrafirma need only to show proof that it had offered the Fil-German big man a new contract whether in person or through e-mail.

"Ang rights noon, nasa Terrafirma, (pero) kailangan mag-offer ang Terrafirma bago matapos ang kontrata sa December 31st. Pag offer siya, email niya, makita natin na nag-offer sila, nasa kanya ‘yung rights.

"Kung hindi siya mag-ooffer at natapos na ‘yung kontrata, free agent ‘yun," said Marcial.

Marcial also said Standhardinger is not yet covered by the unrestricted free agency rule as he has yet to reach the 21-conference threshold to become eligible.

Before the Commissioner’s Cup, Standhardinger was in his 15th conference starting from his stint with San Miguel in the 2017-18 season.

To reach the threshold, however, Marcial said Standhardinger must play, which means the 35-year-old must suit up for six more conferences before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

"Twenty-one conference, kung mag-retire siya … kulang pa siya," said Marcial.

Terrafirma team governor Bobby Rosales revealed that the 35-year-old Standhardinger has indicated to the team that he is retiring, the reason why he has been absent from the Dyip practices in the lead-up to the Commissioner’s Cup.
