ANDREI KUIZON RULES JAVELIN THROW AS PH MATCHES PREVIOUS PARA GAMES GOLD MEDAL HAUL

Filipino para athletics ace Andrei Kuizon delivered the country's 28th gold medal and his second top finish as he ruled the men's javelin throw F54 on Wednesday in the 2023 ASEAN Para Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

With Kuizon's victory, the Philippines is now one gold medal away from breaking its previous gold medal haul in the 2022 edition in Indonesia, where the Filipino athletes copped 28 gold plums to complete a 105-medal hoard—the country's best finish in the regional contest.

Kuizon plucked his first gold medal on Tuesday when he reigned supreme in men's shot put F53/54.

The 22-year-old para athlete was initially handed the silver plum with a 19.03 meter throw as Vietnamese Vivan Tung collected the gold. But the Games organizers decided to separate the winners of his F54 from F34, giving Kuizon the gold medal.

"Nag-decide ang TIC (organizer) ibigay ang gold kay Andrei. Meron na kami papel na pinadala nila na nagpapatunay at nakuha na din namin gold medal niya," said national track and field assistant coach Bernard Bren.

Meanwhile, other para athletics bets Maekel Lita and Arvie Arreglado brought home siler medals in men's discus throw F56 and men's long jump T47.

Para swimmers Gary Bejino and Marco Tinamisan also delivered a pair of silver medals after finishing second in 100m freestyle S6 and 100m freestyle S4.
