The NBA’s Rookie of the Year race just got a major shake-up.
Filipino American rookie Dylan Harper had quickly proven himself as a reliable floor general in the absence of De’Aaron Fox, helping the San Antonio Spurs to an impressive 5-0 start.
Harper was off to a roaring start, averaging 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while shooting an efficient 50 percent from the field.
With De’Aaron Fox out to begin the year, the rookie floor general made the most of his minutes. He led the Spurs to a 5-0 record and formed a dynamic one-two punch with Victor Wembanyama.
The chemistry between the two helped San Antonio storm to a 5-1 start, with Wembanyama looking like an MVP frontrunner and Harper right there beside him in the Rookie of the Year conversation.
But with his calf injury and Fox’s imminent return, Harper’s bid for Rookie of the Year may be slipping away.
The spotlight then shifts to Philadelphia’s V.J. Edgecombe and Dallas’ Cooper Flagg.
Edgecombe has been putting up standout numbers for the Sixers, averaging 20.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists on 49.5 percent shooting. The Bahamian rookie has quickly become a fan favorite in Philly, blending scoring efficiency with playmaking poise. His all-around impact and ability to perform under pressure have positioned him as one of the frontrunners for the award.
Flagg, on the other hand, has had a mixed start in Dallas. The former high school sensation is putting up 13.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists a night. Still, his 37.3 percent shooting clip has raised questions about his offensive rhythm early in the season.
For now, the Rookie of the Year race looks like a two-man battle between Edgecombe and Flagg. Still, if Harper returns well and finds his groove again, the Spurs rookie could make things interesting down the stretch.
In a season that’s already seen plenty of surprises, the rookies are proving they’re here to make some noise.
