UAAP: RESURGENT FEU PUTS NAME IN TIGHT FINAL FOUR RACE

MANILA, Philippines—Far Eastern University coach Sean Chambers has seen his Tamaraws go from cellar dwellers to possible contenders in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament.

FEU strengthened its bid for a Final Four spot with a close 73-70 win over Adamson in overtime to improve to a 4-6 record on Sunday at Araneta Coliseum.

“Just like I told my guys, we put ourselves in the situation where if we continue to play good basketball, we’ll be in the conversation,” he said.

“It’s been an amazing season and I’m happy that we’re able to put ourselves in this kind of conversation this late in the season.”

After starting the season at 0-3, FEU ended the first round on a high and rode that momentum into the second round.

The Tamaraws added the Soaring Falcons to their hit list, snapping Adamson’s four-game winning streak.

With the victory, FEU is now just 2.5 games behind University of Santo Tomas, which is currently fourth in the standings.

Helping the Tamaraws snag the heartstopping overtime win were Jorrick Bautista, who led FEU in scoring with 12 points, and Kirby Mongcopa, who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 17 rebounds.

Still, though, Chambers wasn’t exactly thrilled with how FEU had to escape in OT after leading by as many as 13 points late in the third period.

“I’m not happy how we finished this game off because we could’ve done better but this is their youth,” he said.

“We want to be able to finish off the game like NU did when they finished off La Salle,” he added.

League-leading NU beat La Salle, 75-67, earlier in the first game.

FEU looks to continue its resurgence when it takes on struggling UST Sunday next week at Araneta Coliseum.
