MANILA, Philippines — National pool member Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh capped off her campaign in style, clinching the bronze medal on the final day of the prestigious 55th Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championships held at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore.
Mojdeh, representing Behrouz Elite Swimming Team, went head-to-head with top-notch swimmers in the women's 200m butterfly, including reigning Southeast Asian Games champion Quah Jing Wen of Singapore.
Mojdeh clocked two minutes and 19.50 seconds, enough to secure the bronze medal, while Quah took home the gold with a time of 2:11.66. Another Singaporean bet, Fann Rui Toh, finished second with a time of 2:16.28.
"I was a bit disappointed with my 200m butterfly. While I improved by two seconds in the finals, I aimed for 2:15, closer to my Junior Worlds personal best. I did achieve a personal best 1:05 split for the first 100m, which is what I am happy about. I just need to sustain my back half in order to get better splits next time," Mojdeh said.
The tournament served as exposure for Mojdeh as she prepares for the PAI National Tryout in August, which will serve as a qualifying event for the SEA Games in December.
Mojdeh has a personal best of 2:13, which meets the bronze standard for the SEA Games, but she is determined to improve her time further.
"I need to work on my mental approach to the 200m fly, as I tend to overthink it, despite it being my strongest event. I'm pleased with my improved strength in dives and sprints. I'll continue to work on areas needing improvement to reach my target times," Mojdeh added.
Mojdeh also delivered impressive performances in the two other butterfly events — the 100m butterfly and 50m butterfly — where she clocked respectable times to finish fourth.
She timed 1:02.81 in the 100m butterfly, which was also dominated by Quah with a time of 59.85 seconds.
The Filipino-Iranian tanker also clocked 28.76 seconds in the 50m butterfly, where another SEA Games gold medalist Quah Ting Wen emerged victorious with 26.72 seconds.
"I'm thrilled with my 50m and 100m butterfly times. Achieving personal bests in both prelims and finals allowed me to strategize and correct my mistakes. Adjustments in breathing and touch were key to lowering my times," Mojdeh said.
Mojdeh expressed gratitude to those who continuously support her, including her coaches and teammates, as well as her supportive parents, Joan and Harold Mohammad Mojdeh.
"Thank you so much to Coach Weng for the push in the pool, Coach Jek for strength training, Coach Doll for support in Singapore, my teammates Amina and Xiandi, and Royals Swim Club for making tough sets bearable.
"To my dad for early morning drives to training, and my mom for her unwavering support, thank you all! Now, I will go back more hungry than ever for things I need to work on," Mojdeh concluded. TMT
