MPBL: CJ CANSINO ERUPTS FOR 30 AS ILOILO ROUTS BULACAN

ILOILO rode the hot hands of CJ Cansino in its 92-67 demolition of Bulacan in Season 6 of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) last Monday at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.

Cansino nailed seven threes, and poured in 21 of his game-high 30 points in the first half – pushing the United Royals ahead for good en route to their sixth win in 15 starts in the round-robin elimination phase of the 29-team tournament.

The former University of the Philippines star added nine rebounds to earn Best Player honors.

Solid Back-Up

Cansino got plenty of support, particularly from Gwyne Capacio who scored 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds and  added four assists, and RV Berjay who finished with 11 boards as Iloilo dominated the glass, 50-38.

With CJ Catapusan and Mark Nonoy joining the scoring spree, the United Royals led by as many as 27, 86-59, late in the fourth quarter.

The Kuyas stumbled despite five players posting twin digits, led by Jason Celis’ 13. Eric Jabel added 12 points, Khen Osicos and Ralph Manzo added 11 apiece, and Andrei Dada chipped in 10 but it wasn’t enough as Bulacan fell to 2-14.

MPBL heads to the Caloocan Sports Complex on Tuesday with a triple-header, pitting Rizal against Mindoro at 4 p.m., Negros against Imus at 6 p.m., and Davao against Caloocan at 8 p.m.
