Josef Calo-oy erupted offensively to help Benilde-La Salle Green Hills eke out a 100-91 win against Mapua University in the NCAA Season 101 juniors basketball on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Calo-oy dropped 32 points on 3-of-4 clip from beyond the arc while also grabbing two steals, one assist, and one block as the Greenies fended off Mapua and improved to 6-3 in Group B.
The win also allowed Benilde-LSGH to put an end to the Red Robins’ four-game winning streak that saw Mapua down powerhouse teams San Beda, Letran, JRU, and EAC.
LSGH proved also that it isn’t a one-man show with Jaime Hizon and Patrick Pasinos chipping in 17 and 14 points apiece, with the latter collecting 10 boards, two dimes, four blocks, and three steals.
A Calo-oy triple to open the fourth period sent LSGH to its biggest lead at 85-67.
But Mapua slowly flipped the switch for a comeback attempt led by MJ Bernabe, Jhillian Palis, and Foilan Reyes, whose huge three-pointer cut the deficit to five, 84-89, with still 6:10 to play.
But Pasino extinguished Mapua's hopes with a booming triple of his own before Calo-oy sank three straight baskets to regain a 100-89 cushion in the final 2:12.
Despite the loss, five Mapua players reached double-digit scoring with Reyes pacing them with 21 points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
