LADY CHIEFS CAPTURE FOURTH SEMIS BERTH

MANILA, Philippines — Arellano University was fully aware entering yesterday’s game that it needed the stars to align to claim the last slot to the NCAA Season 99 women’s volleyball stepladder semis.

First, Arellano needed Mapua to drop at least a set against San Beda. Then it had to beat Jose Rizal U in straight sets. The Lady Chiefs got both to claim the fourth spot in the knockout phase.

It started with Mapua conceding a set to an already also-ran but still competitive San Beda in a 25-21, 26-24, 22-25, 25-13 victory, and Arellano scoring a 25-16, 25-16, 25-16 sweep over Jose Rizal U.

The developments sent Arellano, the former four-time champion, back to the semis after missing the cut a year ago.

“Nagpapasalamat ako sa first game sa San Beda. Sila ang gumawa ng paraan para pumasok kami. Thank you coach (Edgar) Barroga at sa lahat ng players ng San Beda,” said AU coach Obet Javier.

“Sinabi din ng presidente namin na kailangan kami manalo ng straight sets,” added Javier referring to AU president Francisco Cayco.

AU thus joined College of St. Benilde (9-0), Letran (6-2) and Lyceum of the Philippines U (6-3) in the semis.

The Lady Chiefs will face either the Lady Pirates or the Lady Knights in the semis.
