BLU GIRLS OPEN CANADA CUP WITH WIN VS NEW ZEALAND

The Philippine women's softball team made a powerful statement by dominating New Zealand, 5-1, to start its campaign in the 2024 Canada Cup International Softball Championship in Surrey, British Columbia on Tuesday (Manila time).

The Blu Girls drew first blood in the second inning but New Zealand tied the count with a run in the sixth inning.

The Philippines, however, answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead and never looked back.

The team's impressive display impressed Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier, who expressed his profound joy over the victorious start.

"I have always believed in the capability of our team. Their performance today is a result of their hard work and earnest attitude. I am confident they can continue this momentum and bring home the championship," Lhuillier said.

The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed team, however, is set for a challenging schedule on Day 2 as it battles Hong Kong in the afternoon and host Canada in the evening match on June 3.

Hong Kong and Canada are expected to provide stiff competition but the Blu Girls are prepared and confident to prevail following their stellar performance against New Zealand.
